On Tuesday, February 17th, GM Mike Houston testified before the Maryland Senate Finance Committee in support of SB387 to ban dynamic pricing in Maryland. This bill would be the first of its kind in the country. The Consumer Reports investigation released in December showed companies like Instacart are using dynamic pricing to charge customers variable amounts for the same products. Dynamic pricing harms retailers like TPSS by overcharging customers and reducing consumers’ grocery spend dollars to pad the bottom line of a small number of large companies. Legislation will be needed to rein in these practices, which are already being utilized broadly.
